Family History Complied by Lucy Henderson Horton"- Wrong Henderson Information

So as I am doing my research about the Henderson's of Grainger, TN, I realized there is a lot of information out on the internet - - - a lot of wrong information and I feel it is because of books written in the early 1900s. The book is   "Family History Complied by Lucy Henderson Horton" .

A lot of people use her book as the main source for the Henderson's of Colonial America and as some have told me, not all is accurate only because of the surname: Henderson being popular.

Thanks to fires, wars, and people keeping family secrets and unmarked graves, there is a lot of information that has been lost and may not be found... not unless we dig up the graves and take a DNA sample. Okay kidding. And disgusting thought

So with that said and done, I have figured something out that I will not tell you the answer to what I am talking about because it will be in the book I am writing. Yes folks, a book that I researched information, found information and I think I have put the links between Hawkins County and Grainger County Henderson's and Jefferson County Henderson's together. Oh and Kentucky Henderson's. I think this 'theory' that I am proving right now as ye olde documents and 'translate' them into modern English is something that hasn't been thought of SIMPLY because the information wasn't there!

But this is what I will talk about.

(p. 219)
Children of Samuel Henderson (1700-1783) and wife Elizabeth Williams:
Mary
Judge Richard Henderson, president of the Transylvania Company
Nathaniel
Elizabeth
Ann
Susan
John
William
Samuel
Thomas
Pleasant

The William did die in S.C. But notice the Samuel, Thomas, Pleasant and Nathaniel. I have seen them in Hawkins and Grainger. There is a reason but again, I will share the answer with my book that I am currently writing.

The author I mentioned above touches on the names but that is it. Only a few because of the documents that were available at the time. In fact one thing I can say that I found wrong in her book is on page.

page 232 :
William, son of Samuel Henderson (1700-1783) and his wife, Elizabeth Williams, was born in Granville County, N.C. March 5th, 1748; married the widow Nelson of Nelson's Ferry, on Sante Lo. C.; died in 1787. William Henderson shared his restless spirit of the day and in early life went to South Carolina to live, where he had relatives by the name of Transylvanian. he served during the Revolutionary war from this state, being in several battles, among them that of Eutaw Spring.

Later in life, he removed with his family to Tennessee, settling near Dandridge. Children:
Betsy H. Taylor- Moved to Attekapas. Was living in 1834
Ethelred Henderson - moved to Grainger in 1834
John Henderson - who lived near Dandrige, Tn
and yes, there are other children we do not know.

But I like this part: Ethelred Henderson, son of William Henderson b. 1748, son of Samuel Henderson (1700-1783) and his wife Liz Williams, was born in Jefferson County, TN - WRONG. And he then moved to Grainger when he was an adult. So far WRONG.
Wrong, why?

For starters, Jefferson County, TN became a county on June 11th 1792. Also I haven't seen any documents to prove a Ethelred lived in Grainger. Only because my direct line lived and died in Grainger until my great-great-grandfather moved to Knoxville and had kids, as well as his sister who moved to Clairborne, TN.

Do I think the author was 100% wrong on the information she wrote on the Henderson's ? no. I think she got things mixed up. Remember she wrote this in the super duper early 1900s (1902) so the information that she had, was probably verbal. I doubt she went to Grainger and knocked on my family's door or other peoples families doors and said "yo, so which Henderson are you related to?"

Someone told me that she got things mixed up, that "according to the Archibald Henderson Papers on the Henderson family located in the Wilson Library on the NC Campus in Chapel Hill, NC.  He discusses Lucy Horton's book and how mixed up she was."

and that is the problem we have. There is so much information and yet lack of information that things can easily get mixed up. And thanks to ancestry.com, getting that information you want. .who you are related to can be almost 100% wrong because people copy each others tree's. "oh I have a leaf, I know I am related to that person". But what proof?

that is my point of my blog that I am putting into a book. The proof. Who is right and who is wrong?

Also noting: Not every Henderson is documented (duh like my family lol) so back in the day, a William Henderson, for example, could have had 14 kids, 10 being boys and four being girls. And only 5 were documented because the rest either died or moved counties or were up in the mountains (and if you drive in Kentucky and Tennessee, off the beaten path, talking with 'mountain people' (and I can joke about it because I have cousins in both states who live in the mountains), you can see, even in today's eyes, finding a house is hard as heck.

even the land my grandpa, he was a Bunch from Williamsburg, KY,  the land in Dal, KY we still own it since the 1830s, a piece of it, but each time I drive through the narrow one-sided road, on the side of a mountain, I think "geez, how the hell did people not get lost here?"

Jefferson County, TN 1860 Census for Henderson's!

A fellow Henderson told me to look at Jefferson County, TN because it is right next to Grainger, TN.

That would explain why there isn't much record information for Henderson's in Grainger County, TN. Especially that infamous George Henderson who married Nancy Larimore. We know in the 1850 census, there is a George and Nancy Henderson. How let's look at the 1860 census for Jefferson County, TN -

Let's break it down:
P180-05 HENDERSON - Jefferson County, Tenn. , No TWP listed, July 24, 1860- 1256/ 1294
                      Geo. 71 M W Laborer NC

                      Jo R. 22 M W Laborer Tn
This one I am looking at. I wrote the 1850 census on another page (link here)

At the 1850 census, George was 63. Now 10 years later, he should have been 73! The "N" is for Nancy
and it appears that she isn't alive now. She was '49' in the 1850 census (I Think that was written wrong.
I would guess 59!), but another Nancy in the 1850 census..was..23, and 10 years later she should
be married and 33 years. So that rules out that George...or does it?
"Jo R. is 22. In the 1850 census there is a :
Joseph R Henderson-M-14-Tennessee
10 years later he should be 24. So that sounds about right. I am going to conclude the Jefferson County, Tennessee
census record is NOT accurate.

One thing is for sure, Nancy Henderson is dead. Sounds like she is buried in Jefferson.

Also, for the 'N' who was born in TN here in the 1860 census.. guess what? The 1850 census says she was born in North Carolina.
I have said that census records for the birth of the 'father' is not accurate. I have proof
on my Michigan side: Mary Hamilton married Joseph Creasy just before the Civil War. He died in 1876 and left two children behind.
In the 1880 census it states for the son of Joseph that his dad was from Ireland.

but after doing my research, Joseph was in fact from Suffolk, England. Why did they write Ireland?
I am going to guess...because Mary was from Ireland and when they were taking census records, the person assumed, lady was Irish that her hubby was probably Irish.

That is why I am saying the birth for George was not in North Carolina but Virginia. Thus far I cannot find any birth record in Colonial Carolinas
for a 'George Henderson'... in Virginia, so far I can see one. And that is the one who went to Missouri.
but I am going to stop jumping to conclusions.

Okay so now Nancy is dead. Sadly, no will for her ;( No proof she is Stephen's mom. But I did find this interesting:

"George Henderson, died Mar. 10, 1859, ages 70 yrs. 1 mo. 29 dys. Mary
E., wife of George Henderson, died Feb. 24, 1840, aged 28 yrs. 10 mo. 13"
 dys.
"SLGS Marriage Records Vol. 1: George Henderson married Mary Williams,
May 19, 1836. Mary was the daughter of William and Henrietha Williams.
She was born in Fairfax, Virginia Nov. 13, 1824. The father of George,
James Henderson, was a patriot in the Revolutionary War in the Battle of
King's Mountain under General Morgan. James rests in an unmarked grave
beside his wife Jane (Dawson) who was the daughter of a Revolutionary
War soldier. (from the "Reporter" Wedneday, May 29, 1963, page 6, col.
1, by Swanson.)"

Okay final say in Missouri George before I get the Will, that is IF he had one.
But I read this "Mary Williams marriage to George Henderson: 1836 and Mary died in 1840."

George died in 1859 approx. 70 years. Mary died in 1840 at 28 years. Mary would have to be born in 1812.
That means at 1836, she would have been : 24. Good time for marriage. This George would have been: 47 years old.
I am going to guess George was married once before.....

and that is why I am giving that conclusion. That George could be the same George married to Nancy.
unless there were two George Henderson's born the same year...in Virginia.. that could happen.

time to put my thinking cap back on....

Henderson Families - Colonial - Virginia - Census

So what conclusion am I making about George Henderson, the one who was in Grainger Tn, who married Nancy Larimore and vanished after the 1850 census???

Simple. he was born between 1785/1790 in Virginia. So far in North Carolina, I am looking at old Wills and I do not see a "George Henderson" in the Wills.

Last night I was reading an old book, something that was noticed but overlooked. Frank Laramore Henderson (Larimore). Father? George Henderson but for some reason he is connected to a different George Henderson and Mary Williams. What that book failed to write or do their 'research' back in 1902 lol was George Henderson and Mary Williams was born in the 1800s. This George was born in the 1700s. I think Frank is the 1700s George and Nancy Larimore.

Here is some more interesting information. I did the North Carolina Hendersons (1780+ Census) (link)  Below is for Virginia:

George Henderson of TN/ Missouri - clue that was overlooked?

Just found a clue on books.google.com :

Remember I wrote in earlier posts that in Missouri, there are two George Henderson's. One born in the 1800s and the other born in the 1700s. The older one, born in the 1700s is from Virginia.

I am looking at Wills from any Henderson dude's from the 1700s/1800s in North Carolina and so far I do not see a George talked about. But I will come back to this sentence when I am finished going through Wills there as well as Virginia.

So I realized something. I bet you this George Henderson who married Mary (Williams?) in the 1800s is a son of George from the 1700s.

That makes sense!  Then somehow I found the following on books.google.com:

Laramore? Larimore? connection? You betya! But why wasn't this added in the George Henderson, the infamous George Henderson of VA-TN and MO ? Remember, I posted earlier that Nancy Larimore's father, Hugh Larimore died in MO, but was born in North Carolina, went to Tennessee and then went to Missouri.

And he put in his will "George Henderson and Nancy Henderson"

that helped. So who is Frankie? And James? And then there is Stephen. I bet you that This Frank, who is the son of James Alexander Henderson.. and James and Stephen are brothers.
When was this book written??
1902 and  I have said that the earlier books from the 1900s didn't have accurate information. mostly because they didn't have access to online census or internet period.

I know that this 'mystery' about George Henderson and Nancy Henderson keeps going in circles. We know that but there is something that is missing. Just something.

Jefferson County- 1850 Census George and Nancy Henderson

I posted a while back about George Henderson in 1850 census in Jefferson County:

George Henderson: Census 1850 : Jefferson County, Jefferson, Tennessee
Male: Age : 63
Est. birth year: 1787 / birth place: North Carolina (still interesting..because Nancy's family was from North Carolina and I believe she was born there. Also, Stephen (H) Henderson states that in the 1880 census his daddy was born in Virginia. Could there be a mistake on the census? Yes. but where???)

Also, in another post, in Grainger County, TN, there were three Henderson's : William, Thomas and George for the males counted for in the early 1800s. Thomas was William's son and on George's marriage to Nancy, William was the marriage bond. Someone told me that William was born in North Carolina.
So more than likely, William and George are brothers. However, so far I cannot find any information for a William born in North Carolina or a George. Only Virginia.

So these are the people in the household:

George Henderson- Male- 63 yrs - Born in North Carolina

Nancy Henderson- Female - 49 years - Birth: North Carolina

Thomas Henderson- M-22-North Carolina

Mary Henderson -F- 25-North Carolina

Nancy Henderson-F-23-North Carolina

Lucinda Henderson-F-17-Tennessee

George R Henderson-M-19-Tennessee

Joseph R Henderson-M-14-Tennessee

Where would Stephen be in the 1850s census? He was still in Grainger, married to his second wife, Caroline Phillips .

And after looking at this, Stephen would be in his 40s. So good news? THis George and Nancy are not in Stephen's family.

But odd that it is pretty close with family names.

1840 Census of Pensioners Revolutionary or Military Services

j

Found this interesting from : http://www.us-roots.org/colonialamerica/census/1840/1840tn_eh.html:

SOURCE: 1840 Census of Pensioners Revolutionary or Military Services;
With the names, ages, and places of residence
Returned by the marshalls of the several judicial districts; under
The Act for Taking the Sixth Census :

FIRST NAME LAST NAME AGE HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD TOWN COUNTY DISTRICT

David Henderson                49   David Henderson   Districts No. 10 & 11 Lincoln Middle
George Henderson 84 G****e Hender**n
Overton Middle
Pleasant Henderson 84 James M. Henderson
Carroll Western

Why is this interesting?

David Henderson was in : Lincoln County
George Henderson in 1840 was in : Overton County (OV) - this George would be born in 1756
Pleasant Henderson (head of household: James M. Henderson)- was in Carroll County

Relation? Somewhere down the line but not my George :( guess this famous George is harder to find than I could imagine. But still this is quite interesting!

George Henderson - Virginia - Tennessee- Missouri Link?

The Following snippet came from :

A history of the pioneer families of Missouri, with numerous sketches, anecdotes, adventures, etc., relating to early days in Missouri : also the lives of Daniel Boone and the celebrated Indian chief Black Hawk, with numerous biographies and histories of primitive institutions by Wm. S. Bryan and Robert Rose"

Henderson. — Alexander Henderson, of Augusta county,
Va., had sixteen children, and raised ten of them. The
names of those who lived were — John, Samuel, Joseph, Robert,.
David, Alexander, Jr., William, George, James, and DanieL
The latter married Martha Steele, of Virginia, and settled on
Auxvasse creek, in Callaway county, in 1823. They had four
children, all of whom were born in Virginia and came to Mis-
souri with their parents. Their names were — Alexander, James-
S., John S., and Jane. Alexander married Dicey Finley. Judge
James S. married Emily Boone, daughter of Judge Jesse Boone.
John S, was married twice ; first to Mary Snell, and second to-
Elizabeth Pratt. Jane married Colonel Isaac Tate. Joseph
Henderson, brother of Daniel, married Susan Rallef, of Virginia,,
and settled in Callaway county in 1835. John married Polly
Burton, of Kentucky, and settled in Callaway county in 1835.
William married a widow lady named Irvine, and settled in
Audrain county. George and James also settled in Missouri, the
former in Clay county, and the latter in St. Louis. David mar-
ried Ellen Anderson, and they had — Alexander, David, Jr.,,
Joseph, John, William, Margaret, Rachel, Elizabeth, and Elsa.
Alexander, son of David Henderson, Sr., was married first to
Margaret Hart, and second to Elizabeth Morrison. He had ten
children by his two wives. Mr. Henderson settled in Callaway
county at an early date, and taught singing school for a number
of years. It is said that he and George W. Burt sang love songs
so sweetly that the pupils all fell in love with them. David J.,
son of Alexander Henderson, Jr., married Mary R. Blackenburg,
and settled in Callaway county in 1828. They had nine sons and
two daughters.

1850 United States Federal Census about George Henderson

Name: George Henderson
Age: 61
Birth Year: abt 1789
Birthplace: Virginia
Home in 1850: District 82, St Louis, Missouri
Gender: Male
Family Number: 1913
Household Members:
Name Age
George Henderson 61
Lewis Q Martin 29
Ann E H Martin 25
George Weshman 33

I found this interesting. I can see how this is the same person , the same George I am looking for.

Now, let's look at another bit. Of another George Henderson who was in Missouri:
Name: George Henderson
Spouse: Mary E Williams
Marriage Date: 19 May 1836
So yes there was a George Henderson who married a Mary E Williams but this isn't the George we want!

So conclusion?
Well, by George, we might got it! This could be our Georgie.... However, in Jefferson County, Tennessee, there was a George Henderson who was married to a Nancy Henderson and Jefferson County is next door to Grainger County.

So.. yeah ... now we are back to square one OR are we? What if when the census was recorded, George was visiting some family up in MO and his wife Nancy said he was still alive in Tennessee and they put his name down.

that could happen. More than likely yes but I have to find his will

Jefferson County, TN 1850 Census : Henderson

Interesting. I noted in an earlier post about George and Nancy Henderson .. asking where the hell did they go?

Sort of like playing the game "Where in the world is 'George and Nancy Henderson' (theme song playing in my head 'where in the world is Carmen Santiago'

It was noted on another website that there was a George and Nancy Henderson who was in Jefferson County, TN in the 1850 Census:

George Henderson: 63
Nancy Henderson: 44
Thomas Henderson : 22
Mary Henderson : 25
Nancy Henderson: 23

Birth: North Carolina for all….

Except....that is wrong. I know that Nancy was born in North Carolina..or her father was. George was born in Virginia..either that OR... the 1880 census for Stephen in Grainger Co, TN is wrong for stating that his dad was born in Virginia.

So let's go with this. Family names. My gggreat grandpa was Thomas. I bet you that Stephen had a brother named Thomas he was fond of. So let's do a research on Thomas living in Jefferson.

Note: The Surname is in Caps, along with the date of the census page, the census district,
the Post Office, and the information from Column 1 and Column 2.

The information from Columns 11, 12, 13 was encoded following the Column 10 information,
Place of Birth.

The encoding is:
M, for married within the year,
S, for attending school within the year, and
I, for illiterate for a check in Column 13 for persons over 20 who could not read
      or write.

Sadly, it appears that Stephen was Illiterate. But then again we cannot prove that he was or wasn't.
Because normally when the census records are taken, they come to the house and the wife is at home with the kids
and the hubby is working.

Although he was a farmer....he could have been home. Or maybe the wife was? Again w do not know.
I just know that my gggreat grandfather Thomas could read and write. And his son William could also
do the same.

Also William (Thomas' son) was a Baptist Minister.

Old Post about Henderson in Tennessee history..

Found this on Rootsweb:

Henderson Ancestors and Descendants by Ethlyn Henderson Fisher and Alvina Wells Henderson

Thomas, the Pioneer settled in an area called Rocky Springs, about three miles wast of the settlement called Bean Station.

William: The male members of William's Family seem to be accounted for as most of them died young. Father Thomas deeded 286 acres of land to William. He lived his entire life on this land, which was in the same area where his father lived. There is a cemetery there with several Henderson's in it. It is at the junction of US Highway 11W and 25E.

NOTE: Information from Tom Coffman- tom-sue@oio.net

Elizabeth (Teriby,Ferby,Pharby) Elizabeth (last name unknown) was born 1810. She married John Coffman 1827. He was born Greene Co. Tn.

In 1796 his uncle John (Coffman) of Greene County, Tennessee purchased land from Daniel Henderson of Jefferson County, Tennessee on the Nolichucky . His father Harmon married a Margarett Hickman probably in Shenandoah Va.

Harmon lived on the Nolichucky near Lick Creek near Warrensburg Tn. John and Ferby had children:
1st son John Allen Coffman
2nd son William HENDERSON Coffman .

John and Ferby moved to Jackson Co Ala. around 1828. Their first son is buried there. They sold land in 1838. They also lived around Warrensburg Mo. He came to Ark 1840s; the rest of the family stayed in Mo. Some went to Ia. then on to Utah.

**Could Daniel Henderson had a daughter Elizabeth (Teriby,Ferby, Pharby) Henderson who married John Coffman?
**Warrensburg, Tennessee is in Greene County right on the county line with Cocke County.

Notes for ETHELDRED J. HENDERSON:
Date of birth, March 13, 1810 from tombstone is in question. The stone was carved by Knoxville stone-cutter Robert McIntyre, who appears in the Knoxville Directory from 1859-1882. He was not listed in the 1850 census for Knoxville.

I was probably placed by Ethlered's son, William A. Henderson after his sister, Mary Ann's death in 1875. he and his mother, Emeline were still alive. This explains the motto on the monument:
